In the late 1950’s, diesel was replacing steam powered engines and the Northern Pacific No. 245 is a prime example of these first-generation diesel-powered engines. It was assigned to passenger service, pulling cars from the Duluth Union Depot in the late 1950s, until it was later re-geared for pulling freight. It now sees regular service on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Photo by Dave Schauer.
